Whats the deal with the Atlantic??

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Well it is February and we have had a few dry Fronts passing through down in SW Florida and into the Atlantic. These temps can and will start to change with the longer days and less fronts penetrating the tropics. When May ends my guess is this area of cool will be much smaller if not gone.. The Gulf looks like it will be starting off with less cool anomalies than last year and seems to look pretty warm compared to last year.

We've had a series of cutoff lows that sat and spun out in the Central ATL for some time, and finally has upwelled the waters (continuous NW flow) enough to cause some cooling in the SST's in that region.

It's nothing that I would be alarmed about right now.

Hey Jesse...

I have a couple of thoughts...

1. High pressure has been positioned off the coast of the eastern US all season long. I am not sure about this...but I wonder if the easterly flow south of FL has somehow interrupted the FL current of the Gulf Stream...again not sure about that...but if the prevailing winds are working against the current it could be holding some warm surface water in the Gulf.

2. Frances...Jeanne and to some extent Charley sucked a ton of OHC (oceanic heat content) from the water east of Florida. Since that water hasn't had time to recharge...perhaps the cooler pocket of SST's is rotating back to the east around the high I mentioned in point one.

3. With all of the warm water in the MDR (mean development region) of the Atlantic...and with most of the basin dominated by positive SST anoms...it's only a matter of time before that cool pocket moderates...unfortunately right in time for the 2005 season to get going.

Great point...I was thinking about the same thing...
