Yes, a hurricane CAN break away from recurvature. I've seen this type of track in WPAC too. What apparently happened is that the upper High to the east of the storm intensified and shifted north thus changing the steering flow from a SW flow aloft to a SSE flow. The building of the ridge could have been a result of the storm itself which, from the track colors, looks to be a fairly intense one thus the warm air at all levels coming up the east side of the storm would have pumped up the ridge.
