I think the most unexpected development this year has been Hurricane "Catarina," and there is no question why!!! But also the development of Iván II was really unexpected and unpredictable.

Tropical depression 10 should not be on this list...My reasoning behind that is. Three days before the nhc, upgraded it to tropical depression 10. It was East of the Cape verde islands, at the time was a very well defined system, with a nice large area of convection. It also was forming banding. Many people are going to disagree with me but this system looked very good at the time. Then it moved into the "SAL" Which distoryed its convection...A few days later the system reoreganized, with it looking better then when they upgraded it for the next 2 days.
As for Bonnie that was no surprize. The night before recon went into the system. Radar/Satellite shown a well defined LLC...With even a eye with banding on the radar. Which the recon the next day reported a 10 nmi wide eye. It might of even been a hurricane for a short time that night.
The only two systems that surprize me is the south Atlantic hurricane/Troical storm around January 19th.
In maybe why the nhc did not call the system that hit Hati as a subtropical system. In May.
