It's Too Late...
...Those along the MS/AL coast that are still home, should stay home, IMO. If you are in LA, you could still make it to the West and escape the storm. This system is moving at a much quicker clip this morning. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT ... -loop.html

this morning the storm appears more disorganized, but still a 140 mph Cat4. It remains on track headed for mobile, AL.

Ivan appears to have outrun the "rockey mountain trough".

The Lake Pontchartrain scenario for New Orleans was analyzed years ago I wonder why they did not develop a busing convoy solution for the the shotgun shack folks living in the lowest parts of New Orleans?

Jes - Please do listen to your local emergency folks with regard to where your home is located and evacuation, etc. However, if you can put those kitties into carriers (or pillowcases as mentioned in another thread) do so and get the heck out of dodge. IMHO the low pressure and strong winds, storm surge, rain, etc. will be far more traumatic to your pets and to you than heading out of town.
And do let this board know what you've decided to do! Many are concerned for your safety (and the kitties also).

Are they running out of all grades...
On a radio report, an owner said they were out of regular unleaded, but still had higher grades in supply.

Ive had to explain to our customers that New orleans area is in almost a state of Martial law and we cannot get NAYONE in there to deliver. Baton Rouge is also suffering runouts. We just cant get gas in there. Were trying, but its pretty much impossible. Putting drivers in harms way is NOT how we do business.

It's headed your way, Strong 3 or a 4 at landfall. My advice is to leave, but it's probably too late. Tropical Storm Force winds should arrive this afternoon.

If you cannot reach another place of safety further away...
contact your local emergency management office.
Tell them where you are, so that they may be aware of your situation. (not to be morbid, but give them the conatct information for your nearest out-of-area kin/friends)
Get a list of shelters nearby and enroute to your desired destination.
Be calm, and you will be safe.
