I am starting to feel like we in the Tampa area are out of the woods. All of the models are moving ivan away, and all of the amateur forecasters here continue to move it further west. My plywood is going to remain in the shed I do believe.

Hey be happy. I blew $600 on plywood middle of last week. If that keeps the damned storm away, it was well worth it. :D

They were in Punta Gorda earlier weren't they? They love the Tampa probability for the ratings.

It's unfortunate the teevee is giving people a false sense of security. I know the tension is high in the Bay area. Gas runs. Strangers arguing in markets.
It's okay to breathe and relax, but stay alert. That's what Jamaicans keep saying to do on the radio.

It can still bring TS or hurricane gusts to Tampa even if it takes a track to the Panhandle.

I live in central Pasco county, 25-30 miles away from any water. My house was just built 1.5 months ago to the newest building code (steel straps, reinforced garage, etc).

Is it REALLY necessary to put up plywood over the windows and sliding glass doors? If yes/no, where would it be necessary, Cat 1,2,3,4,5?

I have been in the Tampa area for about 6 years now, and have never really experienced a hurricane other than what my area got recently, which wasn't much where I am.

If it does go to the panhandle it looks like the route it will take will keep it about 150 miles from the coast. At that distance I will not be too concerned. But I am starting to think it will go further west than the forecast track is currently.

Hey, if you want to make your decisions based on models (which I don't think you really understand) and amateur forecasters, it's your life. But the National Hurricane Center says you are very much not in the clear. There is now a 13% chance that the center will pass within 65 miles of Tampa by 2 PM Tuesday.

the local news here in Central Florida is not even entertaining the idea this could change course and come acoss us. should I consider this a false sense of security? Considering Charley I think they would at least be reminding us of the unpredictability of these things. Any thoughts?

Well then why don't you explain the models to all of us then. And I guess you do not think much of the amateur meteorologists here huh? I am sure they are skilled in the analyzing of theses systems. Amateur just means they are not getting paid. Although they may not be able to decipher all of the model data as well as yourself.

When Frances hit S Fla, effects were felt big time even north of the Fla/Ga border--much further away than anyone on the peninsula would be from Ivan. So unless this storm makes a sharp turn and misses the state entirely, there is no good news for the storm strikken peninsula.

ColdFront77 wrote:Very, very, very good point! It is said so many times because those that never heard it before hear it for the first time: The center of the storm and it FOREcast track isn't the only place that will experience the storm system.

NO offense at all... I find it interesting why people think otherwise.
