I partially agree with you all. Been here for over 11 years and I love it.
But are you all going to say that when the insurance companies pull out again or raise the rates so high that we can't afford it? Or when we can't get financing for our homes because the lenders will only finance insured homes?
I think this could put a MAJOR dent in our economy that will affect the big and little guys.

Well, I hate to admit this, but about a week before Charley struck I wrote a scathing letter to the Bradenton Herald regarding over-development or what outsiders term "progress". A developer was about to destroy the Historic Lamb House in Palmetto. (still is, by the way.) In my letter, I embarrassingly hoped for another Cat 5 to wash away the @#$@#$ yankees and leave us to each other and the mosquitoes.
The following week I was hiding under the staircase in Arcadia as Charley blew over and eating my words. The letter remains on my refrigerator as a reminder to be careful what you wish for. My husband teases me awfully about cursing the state.
But to be quite honest, and I know many natives feel this way. Florida has been going the wrong direction now for many years. If we wanted crowding like New York, we would live there. Most of us came for peace, serenity, the wild outdoors, and mild weather. (My ancestors were here in 1833) Now we have no access to islands where we once camped freely. We fight traffic every single day. Our schools are overcrowded and we are running out of water. We never built on the beaches for obvious reasons. Developers and a strong demand from northerners have rendered our sandpiles into multi-billion dollar soon-to-be-losses and have raised insurance costs for us all.
Florida is extremely wealthy in agriculture, being one of the few places in the world with three distinct growing seasons. Tourism is NOT necessary to survive here. We survived very well for generations long before tourism became our major industry.
So I guess my answer to your simple question is "YES, some of us would still be here if there was no air conditioner. I certainly didn't have it growing up."
