#1 Postby charleston_hugo_veteran » Sat Aug 28, 2004 4:43 pm

I was just listening to TWC and they are talking of all the Cat 5 canes that have hit U.S. 400 people died in the 1935 cane.

They also say Andrew was a Cat 5....hummmm....did not know that!

Andrew actually continued to intensify while making landfall and was at peak intensity over land.

The 1900 Galveston hurricane HAD to be a cat 5, I would think, with a storm surge such as it had.

One correction. It's not the "Key West" 1935 hurricane. It made landfall around Long Key-Lower Matecumbe Key, about 60-plus miles northeast of Key West. It was before storms were assigned names, but today, it's almost universally known as the "Labor Day Hurricane."

A monument to the more than 400 killed actually holds the ashes of some victims, who were cremated in a pile of wood coffins where the monument stands, in Islamorada on Upper Matecumbe Key.

It's an absolutely fascinating and frightening storm, a lot's been written about it.

You may have missed it above but the NHC upgraded Andrew to a CAT 5 in 2002. That's at landfall. :-)

Big news from Hurdat! The Labor Day storm was indeed stronger, and is now analyzed of having a peak intensity of 160 knots, or 185 M.P.H. Just letting you know. Here's the link. Go to "A reanalysis of 1926 and 1935".

Sorry, Andrew was re-classified as a Cat 5 at landfall... The re-classification also talked about Andrew continued to intensify after moving inland.. You most have missed that in 2002..

That Labor Day Hurricane is phenomonal!!! TD to Cat 5 in one day!! Just amazing!! How on earth is this possible? The SST's had to be 90 or above and ZERO shear or dry air. Just amazing. People in the Keys were expecting a weak little TD, instead they get one of the most powerful storms ever. Imagine this happening today!
