Twelve Years Ago, Tropical Storm Lester

#1 Postby Aslkahuna » Mon Aug 23, 2004 3:46 pm

became the first named storm of 1992 to hit the US. This former EPAC hurricane moved into AZ east of Nogales around 10pm MST while still at Tropical Storm intensity about 4.5 hours before Andrew made landfall in FL. In Sierra Vista and on Fort Huachuca, we had sustained winds of 45-55mph with gusts as high 78mph with a lowest pressure of 997mb. Three to six inches of rainfall resulted in local flooding while winds caused power outages and damage in the millions of dollars mostly due to downed trees and damaged roofs. It was one of the strongest Tropical Storm hits in AZ weather history but is nearly forgotten because of what happened in Florida a few hours later.
