Only One Word, "Unbelievable"

Is just unbelievable to see Hurricane Charley leaving the northern coast of Cuba without suffering any structural damage. The eyewall looks to be as healthy as ever and the deep convection continues to surround the center. Guys, I think we already have our second major hurricane of the season in our hands. Nice to have had two hurricanes already and both of them reaching major category. I will have to search through history to see if I can find something similar. Finally, the weather should be clearing out in the southern part of the province of Havana and maybe they will wake up to see sunshine and to start rebuilding.

Indeed. His overall structure coming off of Cuba impressed me even more than when he first moved onto it.

This is not the leats bit surprising. As I said earlier, the only hurricane in like the last 40 years that has weakened over Cuba (except for Michelle that was sheared) was Camielle. Lili in 1996 remained over Cuba for 12 hours and there was no SLP change, Georges intensified over the eastern part as did Elena, Lili in 2002 went from 1 to a 2 over Cuba

Derek, what indications do you have that shear is about to increase, and about how much do you expect over the system before landfall?

the WV is showing that the western outflow is starting to ber estricted and guidance is not showing any significant development before landfall.

As my 5 a.m. forecast states, with the trough approaching, it very well not make the tampa area, which would mean a track off of the east coast resulting in a 3rd landfall in the carolinas

I hope you are right. Unfornately I woke up about a hour a so ago and I have seen steady intensification to now. Derek insurance rates have skyrocketed the past few yr. I cant see them paying off without bankruptcy. This is a good test.

Charlie just woke me up from a deep sleep as a squall line hit Melbourne, Brevard County here on the east coast... a powerful blast from a storm still so far away!

This is a really small system compared to what were expecting days ago when it was still a depression. At least that could be the only good news for this system, unfortunately...

And, perhaps more importantly, what did Charley do to Cuba?

Is pretty early to receive news about what happened in Cuba since still no sunlight has appear and power lines and telephone should be down. What I can say is that this is the hardest hit for the Havana area in decades. In 1999, Irene moved and I was there, and nothing more than some trees down and damage to crop and banana plantations, also sugar plantations.

Hurakan, I share your enthusiasm for fascinating hurricanes, but was troubled by your choice of words above:

"Nice to have had two hurricanes already and both of them reaching major category."

I don't think there's going to be much that's NICE about Charley. Please be careful and remember those on the West Coast of FL whose lives are truly being threatened by this storm. This one's for real. It's not just something pretty to look at. This could make Andrew look like child's play in terms of its devastation if it is a direct hit on a major metropoliltan area.
