Hurricane Area in Florida...

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Thu Aug 12, 2004 7:46 pm

Think of one person that you haven't thought of in awhile or somebody that you know that no one else will probably think of--especially that little old widow that doesn't have any relatives, etc. and give them a call and ask them what their plans are for riding out this storm. Some people have nobody to check on them and you may know one of them. These are usually the people that are the most scared and have no idea what to do, also. Check in on these people and mention these types of people to your friends and relatives. They're out there....

Sean, thank you. I had someone do just this when my Mom was living alone in SE FL in 1999 when Floyd was threatening (I work overseas in West Africa much of the time.) It moved me deeply to know one of her neighbors cared to think of her.

That made me think of something my mom told me this afternoon, she lives in an apartment complex for the elderly. FEMA came by her apt. today and gave her and each resident a box filled with hurricane supplies such as batteries, flashlight, canned goods, powdered milk, etc. I was very touched by that. It can be amazing how people come together during a crises!
