This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

That Alex could head out into the Atlantic strengthen and head back to mainland? And if so, has there been any other system to do so?

No. Once, it's gone; this one is gone. Basically that happens when a trough barely picks up a storm and races away; leaving the system to meander, definitely not the situation here.

Remember Kyle? :D

Alex may or may not have a chance to do that. Of course, it all depends on what weather systems are around it as it's off the U.S. east coast.

We already saw what this system did off the Carolina, Georgia and Florida coast over the last 24 to 48 hours.

The tropical storm is expected to start it's move out to sea, further south of where over 80% of the tropical cyclones accelerate up the coast (into and/or toward New England).

HIGHLY unlikely with all these troughs coming off. Kyle was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

I wouldn't say HIGHLY unlikely... tropical storms do the most uncommon things versus other meteorological entities. Unlikely enough, though. Perhaps others need to see the proof of the trough coming through, fast.
