How do you come up with the numbers 91L and 98W? I've never seen waves mentioned like that before.

91L and 98W are storm invests.

It means that somebody who knows thinks that there is reason to watch these systems more closely than normal, and that the possibility exists that they could become named storms.

Beyond that, you will have to do your own research.

I know what an invest is, but I was wondering what the numbers meant. I think I have an idea though. Right now 98L is out there. Does that mean that's the 98th invest to pop up since that Navy site started tracking them? I'm not sure, so don't laugh at me if I'm wrong :P

Actually, the invests are given a 90-series number. The first invest of the year in a given basin is 90, followed by 91, 92, 93, etc. After Invest 99, the next invest will be 90 again. These numbers repeat continuously.

As for the letter, that is for the basin. L = North Atlantic Ocean; T = South Atlantic Ocean; E = Northeast Pacific Ocean (E of 140°W); C = North-central Pacific Ocean (Int'l Dateline to 140°W); W = Northwest Pacific Ocean (Malay Peninsula to Int'l Dateline); P = South Pacific Ocean (E of 135°E); S = South Indian Ocean (W of 135°E); A = Arabian Sea; B = Bay of Bengal;

So, for an example, the tropical wave in the Caribbean was 97L. It was the 7th wave this year in the Atlantic. Our new wave is 98L, the 8th of the year. Should 98L develop, it will change numbers from 98L to 01L. The next wave in the Atlantic will be numbered 99L, followed by 90L.

Furthermore, 80-series numbers are given to test storms.

Hoepfully this helps.

I'm expecting a few of you to comment on this line, so I'll respond now.

NRL Monterey numbered Hurricane Catarina in the South Pacific as 01L back in March.

Since the South Atlantic is not a part of the normal Atlantic, some question if it should be counted as TD 01 or not.

Most likely the first wave to form into a depression will be number 01L. Many units have decided to not count Catarina as a North Atlantic system. As a matter of fact, many models even ran Catarina as 01T rather than 01L.

So what will NRL Monterey do? I'm not sure. But most likely they'll either override the satellite imagery from Catarina with new 01L images, or they'll rename Catarina to 01T.

Regardless, we shall see...
