Can anyone believe this!!

Southern Brazil hit hard by storms

SAO PAULO, Brazil, March 27 (UPI) -- Powerful storms on Saturday battered Brazil's southern coast after some meteorologists predicted a rare South Atlantic hurricane for the area.

Forecasters initially predicted a hurricane originating in the South Atlantic would hit the area. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, such a storm there is exceptionally rare.

In fact, since forecasters began tracking storms using satellites in the 1960s, no hurricane has been spotted forming in the Southern Atlantic.

Brazilian meteorologists found that it did not end up measuring up to hurricane strength and downgraded it from a hurricane to a storm with winds gusting up to 30 mph.

Accuweather Says Brazil Forecasters Out to Lunch

#5 Postby Anonymous » Sat Mar 27, 2004 8:11 pm

Accuweather says the Brazil Forecasters are out to lunch:
''We think the Brazilians are, quite frankly, out to lunch on this one,'' said Michael Sager, an AccuWeather meteorologist. ''I think they're trying to play it down and not cause a panic. I don't know what they're doing, but they're obviously wrong.''

This could turn out really bad, I hope they get some sense in the final hours before landfall or many people will be killed.

UPI isn't the old wire service you remember as UPI. They went out of business and basically resurrected using the old name, but it's basically a joke of a newswire with articles riddled with errors.

AP is a legitimate wire service, but even they botch stuff in science articles. I strongly suspect the "30 mph" is a botch job, typo, or mistranslation.

Most of the errors or shocking stuff in science-related stories in the media are the fault of the media, not the original sources.

Derek, don't think it was a typo or other type error. I imagine they were reporting light, advancing bands from the storm, not the full force.

BTW, you can add Reuters to your list of less than creditible news wire sources.

Eh, an AP article has the Brazilians claiming it's 50-65 mph, not 30 mph, so I suspect UPI as usual just messed up.

The Brazilians persist in claiming it isn't tropical at all, though, and claim there's no anticyclone, which is just laughable.

BTW, I'm not Derek :-)

Considering that this event is a "first of its kind" for Brazilian meteorologists, they don't know what the "heck" they are doing!!!

If I were in the same situation, I'd probably lose my job!

I feel badly for those in the path of the storm, and not being able to relate to anything that they have experienced in their lives. Would love to see radar down there... is there any???

If the Brazilian weather officials act this way in a true weather event, I'd hate to see them acting when there are tornadoes, or any other type of weather emergency going on there....ugh!

(personal opinion here...)
