Very windy in Puerto Rico, the VI and the leewards

#1 Postby cycloneye » Wed Mar 03, 2004 3:18 pm

During all this week windy conditions haved been felt in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the leeward islands as a very strong high pressure north of the islands has created a tight pressure gradient.Winds in the order of 20-30 mph sustained and in the high 30's and there was a report of a 41 mph gust in ST Croix. You can imagine how the high surf is north of the islands.Swells between 9-12 feet swells are crashing into the beaches here in PR north coast.By friday it is expected that the high pressure will begin to weaken some and move to the east permiting the swells to go down and the winds to subside. Also I haved noted some haze in the sky here maybe related to a new mild eruption today of the soufrierre volcano in Monserrat.

I bet PR doesn't often see winds like that outside of a TC. Very interesting!
Well, one thing you don't have to worry about ... is the wind chill! :D

lLuis
we have it here too in St Maarten
the winds have been gusting to at least 35 MPH in some cases
the seas are churning.. on the Northern end of the island there are reports of 10-12 foot waves too.
this weekend the Heineken Regatta is being held.....over 250 boats from all over the world race for 3 days. today the race was around the entire island.
I think the sailors got pretty beat up by those seas but there were some record speeds set. That wind was pushing those boats to the max!

But those high seas swells will subside as the high pressure weakens some and moves to the central-east atlantic by sunday. And the winds also will go down in speed by sunday too to more normal trade wind speeds between 10-20 mph with some higher gusts of 25 mph by sunday but not those 35-40 mph gusts that were reported in some stations of PR,the VI and the northern leewards all this week.

yes, Is aw the forecast for the winds and the seas to subside somewhat tomorrow and even more by Sunday.
I guess the regatta sailors will be happy about that as long as the winds don't die down too much

Windy conditions

The strong wind does have a positive side. Temperatures are cooler and I don't have to rake the leaves on my front lawn, the wind blows them far away :D
