Not really a surprise at all considering the fault. I've never actually felt an earthquake before, but about 4PM, the room started shaking here on the third floor of the dorm. It was kind of weird feeling though because my chair started rocking side to side. Lasted 8 seconds. The entire room indeed shook; things in the room did rattle. The major fault line associated though runs directly under my house back home, and in 20 to 30 years, it is expected to become active, possibly major.

Earthquakes aren't as rare on the East Coast as many think ...

Had a depth of 3 miles, so it was a pretty shallow quake, which would explain the large areal extent of people who felt it. Obviously, some people got excited and exaggerated the amount of damage and motion they felt. There's no way a 4.5 is going to generate a VI or VII intensity.

I will tell you this, I could feel the quake all the way down here near Norfolk. Had no idea what it was at the time and just figured it was a large truck driving through the neighborhood like they always do... Then saw it on the news... Pretty crazy..

Earthquakes may not be that rare here on the East. But I think it's been about 25-30 years since the last one in Florida, probably a lot longer than that
