I know it's only February but super early start to the WPAC season means we already have the first candidate for retirement of the year.
From last week in the Philippines, Tropical Storm Penha (Basyang) was a short-lived weak slop but killed 12 and caused $25.24 million (1.48 billion in Philippine peso) in damage so far. And that value is in the province where it made landfall alone so the total damage is sure to be higher.
Since the Philippines has a practice of retiring any storm that makes direct landfall in the country and causes more than 1 billion peso in damage along with the corresponding WMO name, Penha is likely to be retired.
This is the first time the name Penha was used, having replaced Typhoon Vongfong (2020) which was another relatively less deadly and damaging system that got retired due to the aforementioned rule.
