Excellent write-up and documentation of that historic event!

Based on the precise location of your home/intercept position, it’s conceivable (if not likely) you and Andy experienced maximum sustained winds of at least 130 kt/150 mph with peak wind gusts upwards of 185-195 mph. This estimate is derived by the following:

1) The maximum winds were contained in the inner-most portion of the northern eyewall…which appear to have struck your location, directly.

2) Given your intercept location was approximately 2.5 nautical miles inland from the immediate shoreline, the MSW would need to be decreased by roughly 10%.

3) The aforementioned peak wind gust estimate is based on the general rule of thumb that one would simply multiply the
MSW by a factor of 1.25 or 1.3.

In short, I would respectfully argue that it’s likely you guys experienced peak three-second wind gusts higher than the aforementioned estimate provided by Dr. Fujita’s post-storm damage analysis. Regardless, you, Andy, and thousands of other unfortunate souls encountered, and bore witness to, one of the most powerful and destructive wind events this country has ever seen!

Thanks for sharing your personal experience!

Here is a short little retrospective for the 30th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which came ashore in Southeast Florida as a Category 5 hurricane in August 1992.

I worked with the Red Cross at the Headquarters on NW 17th Avenue in Miami. I was on scene very early on in the effort I spent months in the South Dade area. Hurricane Andrew forever changed me as a person. The stories of tragedy, chaos, compassion, heroism, duty, and honor will live with me till my last breath. The level of destruction is etched in my mind.

I live in a hurricane prone area and since returning from DR 831 (Red Cross Andrew Disaster Designation), I have diligently preparred...just in case.

I became a Ham Radio Operator, an ARES member (and leader), and EMT, a Skywarn member, and a community volunteer. During disater(s), I work at my local County EOC.

Disasters happen...community gets us through.
