Any Instant EMAIL or Text Notifications of Tropical Systems?

#1 Postby GeneratorPower » Thu Jun 04, 2015 4:27 pm

My company is getting ready for hurricane season here in Southwest Florida. Since we're in the generator business, we'd like to know ASAP if there are any invests, or areas being monitored by NHC (such as are found in the tropical weather outlook). I'm curious if anybody knows of an instant text message or email alert service for these possible storms? If there isn't something out there, and you'd like to be notified, please PM me if you're interested in starting a service like that. We have a couple of ideas if we can't find something already out there.

Thanks!

Important: we are not interested in just getting notified when a hurricane watch/warning is issued or a new named storm forms. That's already available, even if it is slow (sometimes delayed by 4-6 hours). We are looking for instant alerts when a new invest, or even a new general watch area forms.

I.E., text message when a new thread appears on S2K that says "Area of Disturbed Weather in BOC", etc.

Speaking under correction, I believe Storm2K has (or had) such a service. Having just searched the archives of my Gmail account, I found a message from this board dated August 3, 2008, alerting me to the formation of Tropical Depression 5 in the Gulf of Mexico. The message stated: TD 5 Forms In The Gulf: Takes aim on Texas.

Anyway, I'm sure other members will clarify if this is the case.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The issue is that by the time TD 5 forms, it's too late for some of our prep work. Right now we just surf S2K and NHC TWO for info, but it would be great if there was something automatic. Maybe I'm lazy.

I know there's the RSS feeds, that pop up with the different notifications from the NHC. There used to be an email service for different products, as well.

Edit:
Seems the email service was ended in late 2013. Here's a link to other services: http://www.weather.gov/subscribe-hurricaneinfo

Yeah, we've looked at this page before. The problem I see is that none of the sources are real-time. They all wait for NHC official and NWS official products to be issued. That's simply not early enough for our line of work. I guess we will just have to scour the forums like we do now and do our own looking at the satellite pages.
