Important point about SAL using Isabel Case Study

#1 Postby 'CaneFreak » Thu Aug 01, 2013 9:16 pm

All,

Given all the recent talk about the SAL and how it negatively impacts TC development, it should be mentioned that SAL does not mean there is a 0 percent chance of development down the road. A classic example is given by this case study that was done on Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Had it not been for the SAL, this wave might not have become a TC at all much less made landfall in the US. SAL can be a major game changer when multiple systems are in close proximity to one another and can act to hold off development until the wave encounters more favorable conditions further downstream thereby increasing the chances of a US landfall. Below is 4 minute video of Isabel:

Satellite loops, some at max, with wagon-wheel eye.

Video shot at Elizabeth City, NC, surge of 7-8 ft. funneled up Albermarle Sound, then north up the Pasquotank River to where it narrows at Elizabeth City as eye passed just west. Gust measured 97 mph. by wind tower in city.
