retired names

#1 Postby smithandrewskij978 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 3:19 am

I am just wondering, what hurricanes for the 2011 hurricane season do you think will be retired?

at this rate... none.
We still have about a month until the basin can really get cranked up.

Disclaimer: I'm likely the smartest guy here... but I have no idea where a tropical cyclone will go. I suggest you take my opinion as a grain of salt. I suggest you look to the National Hurricane Center for accurate info.

I'm going out on a limb here: Neither Arlene nor Bret.

Nor Emily. Even if she's a repeat of Katrina.

I hope that there will be no severe damage or fatalities; which means that I hope that there will be no retired hurricanes

If the names Cindy, Don, Emily and Katia are retired, what do you think of this list for the 2017 season

Arlene
Bret
Caroline
Derek
Emma
Franklin
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Jose
Katie
Lenny
Maria
Nate
Ophelia
Philippe
Rina
Stan

Katie is too similar to both Kate (currently used on the 2009/2015 list) and Katia which it would replace...

It probably means that the name "Katie" might be a little too fishy like when someone tried to use the word "Dave" as a name for a hurricane since the name "David" is already retired

Where do you find the names of storms if some get retired? Is there a backup list?

Yeah but there was Frederic>Fabian>Fred on List 1 and you have Paula and Paulette on lists 2 and 6 respectively. I think the only criteria is that its not a name that has been retired or an alternate spelling of the same name Emily/Emilee/Emmalee or Alan/Allen.

None of the storms so far will not get there name retired. Bret and Cindy were both perfectly innocent, so they can stay on the list for Round 7 in 2017. Arlene didn't cause enough damage I believe to be warranted retirement.

Caroline is like a longer version of Carol. Even if Cindy actually was a mean girl this season, there are plenty of other C names out there -

Chelsea, Caylee, Christy, Candice, Crystal, Cynthia, and etc.

No, there isn't a "back-up list".

Names are retired when a country which has been affected by a storm asks the appropriate committee of the World Meteorological Organization to retire them. The country asking for retirement provides three possible replacements and the committee chooses one of them as the replacement. There is no way of knowing what the replacements will be before a country decides to ask for a name's retirement.

Rita was retired after 2005, so if we reach the R this year we will see Rina.

Don should be retired for being the most laughable storm ever.

Don has to get retired because all those bad puns the official agencies wrote "The Don" "Dandy Don" "Don-e" "Donald lost his hairpiece" etc etc, need to be dead and buried in 2011.
