Calculating ACE

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:23 pm

Ok, can someone on here verifiy that I am not a complete doofus? I am trying to explain ACE to someone and here is what I understand it to be:

I get it that it is the sum of the square of the advisory for determining a specific storm. So let me see if I did this right:

TS Foobar has winds of 35 knots. That gets squared which is 35 x 35 yes? That is 1225. That is then divided by 10,000 to get an ACE # for that one advisory of .1225? Do I win the prize or is it back to basic math for me?

Thanks!

That's correct; the assumed unit for ACE is ten thousand square knots.

Thanks. I think we will have some Foobar to deal with later this season. And an ACE to prove it. I did not realize that 1950 was right up there with 243 for its ACE. This according to Wikipedia. And it only had 13 named storms that year....satellites not withstanding.

1950 was a wild season alright.. Didn't start untill August 12th and yet 7 of the 13 were Major Canes and only 2 were TSs!
