Late season TCs in El Nino, neutral, and La Nina years

#1 Postby BigA » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:03 pm

Just because I was curious, I tallied up the data on the number of tropical storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes in El Nino, netural, and La Nina seasons between 1950 and 2009. I also looked at the number and types of storms that formed on or after October 1.

To determine ENSO conditions, I used the late season data (Sept, Oct, Nov average)

El Nino year average (18 seasons) 9.0/4.9/1.9

After September: 1.7/0.9/0

Neutral average (24 seasons) 11.5/6.8/2.9

After September: 2.9/1.5/0.4

La Nina year average (18 seasons) 11.8/6.6/3.1

After September: 2.6/1.5/0.6

My most interesting finding is that no major hurricane has ever formed during El Nino conditions in October or November since 1950.

I hope my fellow readers find this data a bit interesting.

Interesting stats that you bring that shows Neutral ENSO is the most active of the phases of ENSO. By the way the 2005 Atlantic season was in Neutral ENSO.

I suspect Ida was probsbly within 12-18hrs of being a major hurricane in the Caribbean had it stayed off the coast of nicaragua instead of heading inland...
