I just read on the Facebooks that Dr. Lyons is leaving TWC for the NWS in TX. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Looking for links, seeing it all over Twitter and Facebook, but no press release or what not. Hope it is not a hoax that has spread across the wx blogosphere!

I searched Google News and found nothing. Not sure where to look for such info. It was NWS San Angelo that was mentioned on Facebook- that Dr. Lyons would be the MIC for that WFO.

Doesn't it take years in the NWS chain to make it to MIC, though? I've personally never heard of someone outside of the NWS being hired on as a MIC right off the bat.

One other thing...I have his facebook page, and he has not mentioned anything about it on there. People have asked him to clarify the rumors, but he has not been on since yesterday.

Not sure what to make of it. I have asked the people who have posted it to also post links to the source. No dice. Perhaps this is a hoax or mis-info. We shall see.

I don't know anything and haven't seen anything yet, but I find this hard to believe. I wouldn't be as surprised if he was coming to Houston to work for one of the major private weather firms, since several are headquartered here. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Steve Lyons was a GS-15 at NHC before he went to TWC. He would be getting a lateral transfer

However, I am surprised he is not going to something in the hurricane field. I wonder if TWC has hired a new hurricane specialist

When Steve & I shared a cab at the NHC last year, we were talking about tropical coverage at the TWC. He said he's the only met there with much of a clue about the tropics. With him gone, the only reason I would have to watch TWC would be for the live video of landfalling storms.

I have heard that Dr. Lyons is definitely out at the TWC. As for where he is going, I have not heard those details yet. I will post if/when I can get that information.

Another step in the wrong direction for the TWC.

Are they hiring on Brad Pitt as the new tropical weather specialist?

If Dr. Lyons is leaving, I could see TWC moving more in the direction of pre-recorded programming like Storm Stories as opposed to live tropical reporting and analysis because there really is no one there (maybe Abrams and Bettes?) that can give the type of analysis that Dr. Lyons would give. Often, the on-camera person doing the Tropical Updates struggles with terminology, geography, and impact potential, making the tropical update awkward and painful to watch.

Of course they will continue to have Cantore and crew reporting live from the storm, but there are just so many other resources...like the NHC, national and cable news networks, local news, the internet with sites like storm2k, that turning into watch TWC for an analysis and forecast, is just not necessary and not where folks can go for the most accurate and meaningful forecast to their own area.
