109 Years Ago Today

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Tue Sep 08, 2009 4:43 pm

109 years ago today, Galveston was destroyed by the Great Galveston Hurricane that claimed 6,000 to 12,000 lives. Galveston would be changed forever as we know it today. Galveston grew because Indianola was destroyed by a hurricane in 1886.

And, FWIW, I would be packing up the Chevy Tahoe and the cargo trailer full of weather gear and remotely operated camera units one year ago tomorrow for the long trek to Galveston with Mike Watkins to intercept hurricane Ike. I always have the Great Galveston Hurricane in the back of my mind as a benchmark of our hurricane history. I believe it could happen again under the right circumstances- it almost did with Ike and came even closer with Katrina.
