ATL IKE: TCI/Bahamas/Cuba/Florida preps/obs/reports
Since the Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) are situated in a precarious position (only several days away from Ike's impact), this thread may be pertinent. It can be utilized for Florida and other locations in the Southeast down the line as well.
It's slightly early, but this TC warrants it... all preparations should have been completed prior to the season, and any final preps should be ready within the next few days. Bahamas/TCI should prepare now...
Edit: Added Cuba to compilation of locations...

Re: ATL IKE: TCI/Bahamas/Florida preps/obs/reports
Not much we can do at this point. We have the weekend to put the rest of the shutters up. Gassed up and watered and stocked up.
The size of the storm now is encouraging, the position at five days is not, even if we're not supposed to focus on the exact forecast points this far out.

The last leg of that track is my pure conjecture, the forecast ends at 18z offshore.

Reporting from Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands.
Many people evacuating the Island. Private charters flying out since yesterday.
Air Courier service providing flights off island and also taking pets on their flights. Vets working overtime providing International Travel Certificates to pets.....kudos to them.
AA has offered one way flights off island to US citizens holding valid passports. Ticket price unknown.
Neighbors leaving on AA flight, but could only be flown north to Philly.
Stuctural engineer has advised us that villa will not survive a CAT4. We also live on an inland canal which rose over its banks and close to villa in Hanna. With Ike's intenstiy we know we are at risk for it to reach the elevation the villa is at.
House is being boarded up and we have a sea container in which we are putting all our furnishings and other personal belongings now in storage at location here which will flood and lose its roof.
Husband, myself and dog will be leaving here and staying in a sturdy concrete structure inland here on Provo. I feel safe staying there.
Be safe everyone.
Gretchen

Mayor Alvarez from the briefing for Miami-Dade County-
Miami Dade EOC planning a level 2 activation Sunday and a level 1 on Monday. Now is the time to check your supplies. Determine how you will secure your home if necessary, and where you will go if an evacuation order is given. Remember, if an evac order is given, we're not asking you to leave the county, just go west from where you are if you're in a flood zone. Miami-dade gov't is prepared to assist residents, but you have to take personal responsibility for yourself and your family for the first 72 hours after a storm. http://www.miamidade.gov is a great site for lots of info and it's free. Do not take a wait and see approach. Use this weekend to watch and prepare. Pay attention to local media for the latest info.
Adhere to evac orders if they come. We cannot stay in our coastal areas. If you're not sure if you're in an evac zone, call 311 and they'll verify it.

Our community located In Five Cays was very hard hit. This area is very prone to flooding and I fear what will happen there once Ike hits. Reports are coming out by word of mouth and that is about it as to the damage around the Island.
For whatever reason, the radio and news stations here are not updating the people as to the threats of Ike. There was no warning whatsoever for Hanna and even during and after the storm, no reports were forthcoming on the stations...just the usual rap and hip-hop tunes. They then had the actual gaul to say....."it hit us by surprise".
Here we have Ike about to pound on our door and there is no word from the government agencies about its approach.
The sad fact of the matter is that the Government here in the TCI is broke,,,,,,it is preesently under investigation by the British who overrule TCI for corruption by its Premier and Ministers. As such, there are no monies for hurricane supplies, food and other necessities needed by these poor people. There are not even enough hurricane shelters for our population and God only knows what they will do once IKE lands on our door.
I am not a political person and don't mean to pontificate, but I feel you should know the truth of what is really occurring here on Provo and our other Islands.
Please say a prayer for those who are so vulnerable here.

You and your community is in my heart and prayers. Stay Safe. I am glad that you have a secure building to take refuse in. I am very alarmed at the lack of warning by your government. So glad that you have found a way to get good info and to act upon it.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do.

I put this on the Ike discussion thread, might have been the wrong place. I hope this hasn't been posted already, but Governer Crist has declared a state of emergency for the state.

FromBroward EOC -
Mayor - We have the weekend to prepare, so please use it. Be prepared for the first 72 hours. This includes food, water, medications, etc. Have an evacuation plan if you live in an evacuation zone. Now is the time to assess your home. Go outside. Check your roof, landscaping, pool area, windows, garage. Assess your personal important documents. Take pictures of what is of value both inside and outside your home. If you're fortunate enough to have a video camera, use it. If you have patio furniture, or other unsecured items outside, now is the time to bring them inside. Now is the time to be a good neighbor and make sure you don't have something that will become flying objects. We encourage you to have flashlights, batteries, and ice on hand. Fill up your gas tanks. Be sure you have cash on hand. If the storm continues to move on the course it's moving, Monday is the day we'd begin to see a "little bit" of wind activity. Be sure to have your cell phones charged. Make plans for your pets. They will have a pet friendly shelter at Milennium school in Tamarac (pre-reg. required). 311 hotline open Sunday morning and will have staff there 24/7 to answer questions.
This is not the time to panic. This is the time to prepare. This is not an exercise. This storm could have catastrophic impact on this area. This is a storm that is providing a huge potential impact. Do not follow that line as it can change every 6 hours.
Take this storm seriously. Use common sense. Stay tuned to local media for latest info. We are here and monitoring this storm.

Good info!! Actually just got back from the store and gas station. Seems like some people here are paying attention. There were people getting water and the gas station was busy, I had to wait for a pump. I know it is still 5 days out, but to me better safe than sorry. I hope everyone pays attention and stays SAFE!!
