Idea for Admin.

If possible to do without consuming too much server assets, It would be great if a member could toggle on and off a filter that showed only PRO-MET posts. This would really make the active storm section great if you just had a few minutes to sit down at the computer to get an update.

What happened to the link to the Active storms forum on this page? Navigating this forum has become more difficult.

Anyway Stormavoider I think you are looking for the Tropical Analysis forum.

I LOVE having Active its own listing right off the top, and not have to go to TT to get to it!!! :D

Another idea comes to my mind tonight as I'm searching through the confusing titles in 'active' looking for the thread to discuss recon on Gustav, which was way down the page.
Threads should be titled consistantly
ATL Gustav - Discussion - Cat3 in GOM (or Hurricane, whatever, at the end)
ATL Gustav - Recon data
ATL Gustav - Models
ATL Gustav - Recon discussion
ATL Gustav - Advisories
ATL Gustav - Local reports
ATL Hanna - TS in W Atl
ATL 97L - Central Atl
WPA 92W - etc.
CPA 95C - etc.
It would be sooooo much easier to find them. ;-)

Excellent idea, bvigal. If the remainder of this season turns out as active as I think, this could be very helpful.

Thanks, aBajan! Actually, we should do what others have already figured out is the least amount of maintenance (renaming) and the easiest to quickly find. ;-)

ATL:99-INVEST - Discussion
ATL:10-NONAME TD - Discussion
ATL:10-JOSEPINE TS - Discussion
ATL:10-JOSEPINE C3 - Discussion - (blahblah latest)

Once something goes from invest to declared, it gets its storm number.
When it goes from TD to TS it gets a name and classification: TS,C1,C2,C3 etc.
The thread sub-subject (Discussion, models, recon, etc.) goes next, which doesn't change.
The latest 'headline' is put afterward.

If worried about newbies not understanding what they see, could put a sticky called:
UNDERSTANDING ACTIVE STORMS FORUM - ALL NEWCOMERS READ!
(I imagine that would come in handy for several items.)

Wish the mods would consider this, it would sure help right now with all the NEW activity!!

It looks like bvigal's idea is being implemented.

Looks good, although you might want to keep the locations there.

Maybe something like
ATL: 08L.HANNA (TS) in Bahamas - Discussion?

I like the idea of a specific format for the titles, but having a bunch of ATLs as the first part of the title makes it hard (for me anyway) to quickly find the thread I want.

Could the ATL or EPAC be put after the storm name? I.e. like this?

09L.IKE ATL - Discussion

The storm name/number is the most recognizable identifier and should be first in the title, IMHO. I'm like this :double: with all the ATLs :)

That change has made it harder to find the threads faster. I do not like this at all, its very annoying.

09L.IKE ATL - Discussion

First, why is 09L there? This is useless information in a thread title and new people don't follow the NRL usually. I liked it when it showed what status the system was like TD, TS, and hurricane.

It's a work in progress folks. Keep the feedback coming. We're making adjustments as we go.

I suggest we not spell it all out, keep it to "TD", "TS", "H1", "H2", etc. For invests it could be "INV". It gives more space for further description in the thread titles.

Am I missing something? I just don't see the Active Storms forum link in here anymore. I don't visit any of the other forums, and only this one because the threads are constantly moving between the two.

Can you also make some kind of warning for people when they link to a java image loop? I keep falling for those and they crash my browser.

The link is now on the main forum page. This helps reduce server load.

I thought about that, but then you run into an issue with non-NHC titles such as Severe Tropical Storm. However, we will consider it. Trust me... the moderators are discussing back and forth on what we can do.

Well, we already use "STS" occasionally for that, so...

(first poster, pre-Katrina lurker)

I'm a big fan of the naming change. The consistency in front of the title along with the all caps names makes these so much easier to scan.

Is this change going to be permanent or only for the duration of the active Atlantic? It could get a bit messy when the various Southern Hemisphere basins start up, with the different meanings of "Tropical Cyclone" between each of those basins (>64 kt in SWIO; >34kt in SEIO and SPac) etc.

Our hope is for a permanent change for all basins.
