This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Does TS Fay 2008 have retirement cred?

#1 Postby jaxfladude » Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:23 pm

Sounds to me that TS Fay may just get her name retired, from the damage reports so far and the unusual track and tropical behavior...

Only the very worst are usually retired.

Hurricane Juan was retired, and I lived in Halifax during that. It was retired and if that was Retired, this definitely deserves it.

The flooding my friend, the flooding. The city was back up and running 1 week later, schools were closed for 1 week only, and I even had power back in 4 days. Juan was a very bad storm, worst I've ever seen personally, save maybe 'White Juan' for sheer ***** and giggles, but Fay has dumped torrential rain that will cause a lot more property damage than Juan.

It caused property damage where they normally don't get damage from hurricanes while tropical. Unfortunately it's pretty common where Fay is, so unless it gets much worst I don't think Fay would make the cut, so to speak.

Juan also hit Halifax head-on as a Category 2 hurricane. Usually, hurricanes that make it to Canada are low-end Category 1s that are undergoing extratropical transition.

I forget if Juan struck at high tide or not.

Environment Canada has an excellent website devoted to Hurricane Juan.

Well Allison got retired. Right now though it's STILL too early to know if she'll be retired. We'll have to wait another couple days.

Allison also caused 5 billion in damage and heavily damaged parts of Houston

I think we need to wait till Fay is totally gone before we sum up the retirement chances, still dumping huge amounts of rain at the moment.

I think Floridians needed an Allison lesson to 'wise' up.
After all, it's not even a category 2 hurricane, what can be so bad about it? riiiiiiight. :Kick"

Texas soil has the absorbency of a quarter-inch of Astroturf rolled out over concrete. Florida is sand over coral. Fay could rain for 40 days and 40 nights, and not flood anything that isn't already knee-deep.

Tell that to the people with 5 feet of water in their house.

Yeah, Florida pretty much has concrete instead of soil now.

Fay could rain ten times as much and not cause Allison flooding. Flooding will be as bad in spots, but not in overall scale.

Um yes? And Fay hasn't heavily damaged the Space and Treasure coasts?

Allison killed 55 people in the U.S., which is a lot more than Fay has killed (I know there were some deaths in the Caribbean but I don't think there's even been any in the U.S. yet).

EDIT: Nevermind, 2 deaths have now occurred in the U.S. It still has the potential to be retired if it does the unexpected and stays over the Gulf and strengthens while still moving very slowly or the flooding accelerates across the southern U.S. and more deaths and catastrophic flooding occur, which is still a possibility.

not close to 5 billion. We need to keep some perspective

this is closer to 1998 Frances/1994 Alberto. Very bad events, but not retirement worthy

Now that Fay has been ingrained in everyone's minds, maybe it should be retired. When it's all over, I think Fay may have caused just barely enough mayham to be retired.

6 or 7 deaths, but damage to crops could really inflate the total. However there is no checklist to determine if it is bad or not. When all is said and done, it's probably worse than Klaus. It's not such a big deal anymore to get rid of names, so they may request to keep another storm named Fay from hitting Florida. They should've retired Ernesto a couple of years ago.
