favorite non essential items in hurricane kit

#1 Postby docjoe » Sun Aug 03, 2008 10:10 pm

we all know the basics but what are a few "luxuries" you have to have

must have beef jerky
small ipod speakers....afterall you can only listen to the post recovery news on the one remaining station on the radio for so many hours before you need a break
small window unit AC that runs from the generator
peppermints...if you dont have running water or safe water it kind of helps with the fresh breath thing

a big pot. my twins were 7 months old after ivan. i remember multiple times daily using the gas grill to boil water to sterilize bottles and nipples. would have been a real pain without the big pot

As I posted in the other thread (before I saw this one!): M&M's, Cheez-its, Yoo-Hoo. I'd probably also like a nice bottle of Merlot or Shiraz in there, too, although you do need to keep your wits about you. My bro-in-law, who is a doctor, fed me wine as a relaxer after I heard (while we were evacuated) from our neighbor that Katrina had blown off our chimney. So, yeah, wine would be on my list--- for medicinal purposes, of course. ;)
Also, I recommend getting some of those cheap kids' toys to have around as novelties such as little Magna-Doodles, travel-size games, coloring books, paint with water books, little wind up toys, etc. Buy them cheap earlier in the year and store them away until needed-- or if not needed (hopefully!), use them for family trips.

You're in louisiana, so I don't see how you missed the memo, but beer isn't optional.

A bunch of books would be on my list. Something to read and keep you interested. Hit up the library if you don't have your own collection. The hurricane doesn't care if you're sitting nervously by the window listenting to see if a tree is coming for you, or relaxing and chilled out.

I have to go with Lone Star. It's my national beer.

So beer is the most important thing for a Hurricane kit? Now I know where all these stories of human stupidity during Hurricanes come from.

Sure can. You arent going to be able to react to an emergency(such as your house collapsing around you) if you are intoxicated.

Aw, don't be such a party pooper George. lol
With no power what else is to do but have a few drinkies. I guess it depends on the severity of the storm you just went through too.

I think its always nice to have some sweets, ie candy, sweet tarts, lolly pops, ect.
A kiddie pool is great to have on hand to. A great way to cool off during the heat of the day without having
to get in the shower 3-4 times daily.

now you're talking. but actually I would put that in the essincial list. Must Have.
I keep a large supply of rock salt shot for my shot gun too. Works wonders
in those "fire for effect" situations.

A friend of mine who is a police officer said that after Isabel his fellow officers wasted precious time looking after drunks who couldnt look after themselves.

A drunk lighting a candle can have disasterous results.
