Can't The S2K Disclaimer Be Auto-Inserted?

#1 Postby abajan » Sat Jul 12, 2008 5:20 am

Instead of putting the onus on S2K members to include: "The following post is NOT an official forecast and should not be used as such. It is just the opinion of the poster and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological data. It is NOT endorsed by any professional institution including storm2k.org For Official Information please refer to the NHC and NWS products." in posts containing forecasts, isn't there a way that S2K admins can configure the weather forums to have that disclaimer auto-inserted into all posts whether or not they contain forecasts?

Of course, to accommodate posts that don't contain forecast information, the disclaimer would have to be changed slightly to read: "The following post may contain forecast information. If it does, that information is NOT an official forecast and should not be used as such. It is just the opinion of the poster and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological data. It is NOT endorsed by any professional institution including storm2k.org For Official Information please refer to the NHC and NWS products." or something along those lines.

I realize this would make threads look cluttered and "messy" but I think it would better safeguard S2K from potential lawsuits than relying on all members to post responsibly.

Just a thought.

Honestly, I think the disclaimer on the top of the forum is enough. People need to take more responsibility for what they see and hear on the internet. You shouldn't be able to just sue anybody that you didn't hire to do analysis or forecasts for.

I strongly concur as well.

I leave the ultimate decisions to the administrators, but I like what is now implemented.

there is one problem with that

what about the pro mets posts? That disclaimer may not be 100% accurate

Algorithm: Search posts for suspect terms, (will, has to, can't, I predict, etc.); check list of qualified mets; if forecast=true and qualified forecaster=false, insert disclaimer. Or trigger message to poster to consider the disclaimer.

OTOH, it's members' responsibility to post the disclaimer with a forecast. Lots of posts don't need it. Outweighing the risk of misleading regular folks, keeping it voluntary shows who pays attention to the rules, and how honest they are about what's a forecast.

The forums are self-moderating pretty well this season I'd say.

How great would it be to have an "insert disclaimer" button in the post form.

I agree. I write my own disclaimers, and have never had any trouble.

However an 'insert disclaimer' button would be cool.

I like being creative with my disclaimer.
