There was an interesting article posted on Sunday May 18th on the AP wires about how climate change is not responsible for the increased number of hurricanes over the past few years. The article was based on the research of Tom Knutson's computer model that suggests that the number of hurricanes has jumped because of a multi - decade cycle and not global warming. Knutson, a meteorologist with NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) fluid dynamics lab in Princeton New Jersey also suggests what Dr. William Gray has been saying for over five years now...... and thats warmer temperatures may actually decrease the number of storms.
However, most climate experts don't see it that way. They have used the increased number of hurricanes as a symbol of global warnings wrath over the past few years with the overall warmer ocean temperatures being the number one factor fueling them. Knutson's research goes completely against the thinking of most government and scientific research including that of nobel prize winner Al Gore. So the question is why would Knutson's computer model have him suggesting that warmer temperatures would actually DECREASE the number of storms? It's simple...
If you look at the physics of the atmosphere, warm air holds more moisture than cool air. This is because as the temperature of the atmosphere rises so does the atmosphere's ability to hold moisture (this is also the reason why as the temperature rises the relative humidity falls). This then increases evaporation and condensation which in turn increases the amount of cloud cover and rainfall across the globe. This in turn then limits sunshine and creates a COOLER environment. read entire blog
