Retirement Names - Dorian, Fernand, Nestor
So the WMO is meeting tomorrow since World Meteorological Day fell on a Sunday this year. I suppose they will decide what names to retire (if any) from last year's list.
Any thoughts/news can be posted here.
My thoughts:
Dean is a sure thing.
Erin was a fascinating little storm once inland but not noteable enough to be retired.
Felix is a sure thing.
Noel is pretty definite... Haiti probably won't request, but Dominican Republic probably will.
Olga more than likely won't be requested, but Dominican Republic had a rough year so they may want extra recognition.

Precedent setting storms have been retired for much less (Cesar for example).

I did a little research and Venezuela has a Meteorological Service that is member of the WMO. The question then is, when did it become a member?
If it was after 1993, then probably no one asked for Bret's removal.
Interestingly, they have been a member since 1950.

History probably has the answer. The early 90s were filled with political unrest in Venezuela.
"Carlos Andrés Pérez Rodríguez (born October 27, 1922), best known as CAP was President of Venezuela from 1974 to 1979 and again from 1989 to 1993. His first presidency was well-known as the Saudi Venezuela due to the economic and social prosperity, thanks to the enormous income for the petroleum exportation. However, his second period was disastrous - it saw a series of social crises, a popular revolt (denominated Caracazo) and two attempts of coup d'etat (February 4, 1992 and November 27, 1992). Also, he was the first Venezuelan president in office that was separated from his public role on May 20, 1993 by the Supreme Court, for the misappropriation of 250 million bolivars belonging to a presidential discretionary fund."

Re: Retirement's Eve
I'd say only Dean & Felix might be retired, and Dean is questionable. Does just reaching Cat 5 qualify a hurricane for retirement? Direct deaths from Dean were only 32, and it hit a relatively sparsely-populated region.

Re: Retirement's Eve
Dean caused several billion in damage, though. And even though it hit sparesly populated area in Mexico... it caused some pretty bad damage in St. Lucia.

I'd say Dean will likely be retired and Felix surely will be retired. Noel is a possibility, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

http://www.wmo.ch/pages/prog/www/tcp/Meetings/HC30/documents/Doc.4.Add.1.E.doc - Per the WMO report, Meteo-France has requested Felix and Noel for retirement.
Proposal for the replacement of two French names in the 2007 list for the North Atlantic:
-Replace Felix by Fernand or Firmin (which could also be a Spanish name)
-Replace Noel by Nestor (which is also very popular in Haiti).
(edited: I got confused - MF appears to have requested Felix and Noel)
