Actually, I read that joke here and briefly fell for it. I was this close to running to tell my editors we had a new storm. It was a good joke.

This season has turned me into an obsessive reader of the forums here. The discussions, analysis and historical perspective on this site have been incredibly valuable for me as someone just getting his feet wet in the world of hurricanes -- so thanks to all of you, and have a great 2006.

(Of course, I'm not sure if people here would think "great" means no hurricanes or a lot of them -- or a lot of hurricanes that don't hit land.)

Thanks for all the kind words about the board, Bob, and I think we all enjoy the press every once in a while

amazing... now we may end up referring to it as the 2005/6 season, lol.

and zeta isnt a 'z' letter, its a 'zeta' letter. ;)

and also the more storms we have in january on a new alphabet, the further down the alphabet well start next season, and the more likely well hit greek again. though i dont think itll happen. im calling (and hoping) for a relatively calm 2006. id like to build a house and id like an insurance company to write me a reasonably priced policy without any begging.

wasn't fooled

#85 Postby Margie » Fri Dec 30, 2005 6:40 pm

I gotta say I wasn't fooled at all by the fake Zeta post. But then, I've been watching that area very closely since Monday, and knew the current status, and so knew right away that nothing was out there at that time. I learned from a met that I knew this autumn, to always keep track of the big picture.

The real Zeta formed quickly enough anyway, about 12-24 hours ahead of when I thought it would occur.

And, since all of the convection is now NNE of the center (shear is causing a flareup the last couple hours), which is very close to the wall of drier air that is continuing to push into the convection, and part of the LLC is exposed, unless there is a short comeback overnight, I think Zeta will be stripped of its core convection before too long.

I think its entirely possible to get a subtropical storm to form in January, so perhaps we won't get a real break between '05 and '06.

Alberto in January?

#94 Postby jimvb » Fri Dec 30, 2005 11:00 pm

Late in December, nearly a month after the hurricane people have stopped atlantic-outlooking, a tropical storm forms! How long will this continue? Will there be another tropical storm in January or February? If so, I think the NHC will call it Alberto.

I think it should be called Eta, instead. The peak of the hurricane season comes close to August 31/September 1 midnight, and the official hurricane season is on three months on either side of this midnight. So it would make sense to start the hurricane season on the date directly opposite from this midnight, just as we put the International Date Line directly opposite western Europe, which is midway among the great land masses in the world. That would mean the season would continue until February 28 or 29, and the next season would start on March 1. The NHC won't do this because it is calendarist. It follows the calendar instead of the tropical weather.

But since February 28 or 29/March 1 midnight is the nadir of the hurricane season in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the peak of the season in the southern hemisphere. Will we see another Catarina this year? What would they name it if one formed? Alberto? Rio? Eta?

Excuse me, but there is not one single icon for a screaming raving lunatic so these will have to do:

:wall: :Pick: :craz:

IF the new theories about underwater volcanic activity heating up the oceans holds true, then us Floridians are truely screwed.

Happy New Years to all and OH MY GOD.
