Re: Where are you from?
Born in Homestead, Florida. Andrew survivor (I was only 3 at the time)
Currently living in Port Saint Lucie, which is about an hour north of West Palm Beach and two hours south of Orlando. Frances and Jeanne put direct hits on here in 2004, though I was still living in Homestead at the time.
Storms that have affected me personally, that I can remember:
Irene ('99) - direct hit, flooding was a major problem and my two dogs died indirectly because of it
pre-Leslie ('00) - waterlogged everything down here. I missed the bus home from school on the second day of the storm...plus had 1 or 2 days off from school afterward.
Michelle ('01) - another day off from school and I remember there was an extremely long police chase during that day. News choppers flew over my neighborhood covering it (Turnpike ran parallel)
Frances ('04) - Spent the night at my dad's girlfriend's house immediately after the storm, she then lived in West Palm Beach. No electricity, woke up to an extremely humid morning. At night, I never heard WPB so silent or seen it so dark.
Wilma ('05) - First storm in the Port Saint Lucie house...we got minimal hurricane-strength winds here being in the northern edge of the eyewall of the storm. No damage to our house but our yard was trashed and on the western half of the storm, as it was back-building entering the Gulf Stream waters, drove rain under the seams of our front door. No power for 2 1/2 days, though parts of my neighborhood were out for a week or more. The storm was riding out on a powerful early-season cold front. I distinctly remember it getting rather chilly as the storm was speeding out of here, cold air combined with the still powerful wind gusts. Next day we were greeted with big blue skies, low-humidity, low-70s in the afternoon with temps in the 40s at night. That NEVER happens after a hurricane...you're supposed to toil in the heat with no electricity.
Ernesto ('06) - everyone out of here freaked when Ernesto was coming because of years before, though it amounted to absolutely nothing aside from a dreary, gusty day. I insisted to my parents the day before that we don't put up the shutters but they wanted them on, and I had to lug them out of the garage. They're heavy. I worked at a movie theater then and went out to see "Invincible"...it was indeed open. When I got there the parking lot was empty aside from the employees, when I left the lot was half-full and the lobby was packed with people trying to shake off the Ernesto cabin fever.
Fay ('08) - this was a fun one. I couldn't get to work that day (I worked at a Publix on the beach) because US 1 was under three feet of water, as was the rest of the old Port Saint Lucie east of US 1. The Turnpike or I-95 wasn't fairing much better either. I drove to work on US 1 the next day and the water was still very high...the northbound lanes were closed.

I can say that Hurricane Hugo made me realize how powerfull nature can be. From that day forward I have always been a weather nut.

For those of you who are posting your location (and don't have it in your profile), why not take a minute and add it? Then we'll know where you are when you're posting about your weather.
CajunMama started a thread about this shortly before this thread was started. Instructions to do so are in her post.
