E wind on the south side of the convection...I wouldn't be so sure of a closed circulation yet.

I don't think what we've got so far is consistent enough to call a closed circulation. But the candidate area is under the strong convection (which was a surprise to me I expected it to be be further east) so it could happen while recon is up there.

that west wind could have been something local and not a true circ

Yeah, this seem to be continuing to move further east. Looking at those obs again there were really light and variable winds.

They appear to be heading towards the pinwheel hole you can see on sat right now.

Yeah, I was having the same thought.

Mostly there seems to be easterly winds all over.

I've noticed that Barbados is still reporting East winds.

Looks like a giant croissant! Winds near zero probably indicate just a storm relative circulation. It has been moving too fast west. Chris slowed down and developed much deeper convection near this longitude.

I don't believe it has a closed surface circulation yet. The plane is showing mostly E or ESE winds so far. I still see the low clouds ahead of the system moving from east to west. Barbados is still reporting east winds.

I think RECON may need to head more to the northeast semicircle. The winds there and possible actual location of a weak LLC have not been penetrated yet.

I'll guess and say the twist in clouds is just a mid-level swirl, with the convection soon to decrease (it already seems to be displaced from the earlier concentrated area of convection)...
These disturbances often flare up, look impressive for a few hours, and then dissipate - we'll see...

I don't know ... nothing recon is seeing is at all impressive, but that convection has been going strong for over 9 hours now and doen't seem to be dying yet. That's different than the average flare-and-die pattern.

I certainly think it's worth it for recon to stick around for the entire scheduled flight, anyway.

Conclusion at this point: open wave. Seems all the winds were from the south.
