From Stormcarib.com reports it doesn't sound nearly as bad as I had feared. They said all of the concrete structures are still intact, but have water damage from rain seeping through the walls. Not much flooding damage though. If that's all true they'll be able to reopen in a couple of months. Of course it's still early.

WOW I would seriously talk with the people of the Yuctan...Because they could show us how to rebuild so we don't have as much damage. Seriously!
Yeah, the hotels and major resorts in Mexico are actually built quite well, better than the average family home in the U.S. However, the family homes in Mexico and the small, shabby businesses are not even close to code, and these places I'm worried about.

Building codes are very strict for the newer hotels and buildings in Cancun. But when you get to rural areas where there are shabby huts people live in expect the damage to be much, much worse.

Yeah I know what we see as tourists isn't real life there. As someone who tend to explore all over when I travel so I am sure that the actual housing will just be gone but hopefully the tourist industry gets up and running quickly to help the local economy. I do feel bad for anyone who has to go through the horrible destruction, it must just be overwhelming.
