Words cannot describe what I feel for these people...if they survived to pick of the pieces of their lives, they are my heroes. God bless them all.
Edit: Please discuss the winds in another thread...let's give the people of Gulfport some respect.

and the main point is that 170mph isnt needed to do the damage seen in that video. look at all the trees standing.....probably none left if it were 170mph.
Maybe this was brought up I dunno, but didn't SFMR show 130 kt or more sfc winds?

After viewing this video, why in the heck are you all arguing????!!!!!!!!!!
About winds no less!!!! Is this really the time to argue moot points?
I don't mean to sound crabby, but I seriously don't think this is the time or place for it, at this stage. Give some of these people time to digest all of this, please.

It was 125 mph 50 miles SW of Mississippi.
If, when I wake up tomorrow morning, I see more of this type of damage widespread throughout southern Mississippi, then I will begin to suspect even more so of these NUMEROUS +140kts SFMR values reported by Air Force Recon.
Earlier, I was one who didn't believe these high readings, but now these pictures make me wonder, unless it was caused by a TORNADO spawned by the storm.
EDIT: I feel for the people who are suffering this evening...

CajunMama...
The discussion about the winds and surge is nothing close to being disrespectful to our neighbors in Gulfport. It is about the destruction that is shown and IMO and has a place in this thread.

I could be mistaken but a lot of what I saw in that video was surge related damage. It is all on the first floor with most of the rest of the buildings above it intact to some extent or at least not obviously destroyed by wind. Eerily similar to what I saw after Camille. Pictures I have seen on CNN tonight that were taken closer to the beaches made me think I was seeing the aftermath of Camille all over again. I'm not even sure I want to know how really bad it may be.

Until we have confirmation of this catastrophic damage, please do not post it as confirmed unless a link can be provided. To say the very least we are all very concerned and disturbed by the reports we are getting, however, please do your best to confirm this type of information prior to posting it and preferably post it with links. Where are you hearing these reports? There has been virtually no communication coming out of some of these areas.

Hyperstorm wrote:Yes, but this is an area that supposedly received CATEGORY 3 conditions. By the time the storm was nearing the MS coast, the official winds were in the CATEGORY 3 range.
This kind of damage is something you DON'T see in a Category 3, unless the structures are very poorly built.
This is EXTREME damage in my book...
That is incorrect, that is moderate damage. There is zero complete structural failures displayed within that video (which is common feature in in a 4 and particularly 5), even a high Cat 2 can produce results much like those shown. Most People simply don't know what a high 4 or a 5 can do, or looks like, unless you've seen it directly. It is far beyond what is in that video.
