We're praying for Texans affected by this storm....

#21 Postby midlantwx » Mon Jul 14, 2003 1:57 pm

Hi weatherfolks, I'm midlantwx; I live on the east coast in Virginia.

It's beginning to appear increasingly probable that Claudette will hit Texas. Our prayers are going out to y'all. I remember reading all the stories on the 'Net about Allison in Houston that stalled and dumped 37 inches of rain. Texas needs rain but not a flood.

Take care everyone. My mom lives in Buda, about 15 miles SW of Austin. Looks like Austin may get rainbands and possible tornadic activity from this.

Hey Midlantwx, Buda is actually just south of Austin, a few miles south of the city limits.

We're curious here in Texas' capital city as to what Claudette will bring. However, our friends along the mid and upper TX coast will likely suffer the worst of it.

I'll keep the board posted on the effects of Claudette inland ... and what we end up getting.

Thanks for the prayers Midlantx!! Been through Buda several times-my daughter fraduated from SWT in San Marcos.

One of my biggest concerns about Claudette, presuming we get the bad side here in Houston, is the rains. She is slow mover and very wet! We could easily see some major flooding again.

Okay Ticka, I'll worry for you! :o

I know you guys have seen this a hundred times, but like they say, it only takes one and you should never get complacent about storms.

Please do what you need to do in order to keep yourselves safe!

It doesn't take a hurricane to Flood......

#25 Postby midlantwx » Mon Jul 14, 2003 2:37 pm

History is filled with horrifying examples of tropical features that either never became hurricanes or weakened below hurricane strength and stalled out over land and dumped way too much rain.

I spent 33 days in Buda and in and around Austin, from April 28 to May 30. It is very dry in Texas, unlike here in northern Virginia where we are so moist that you have to spray and spray on the mosquito repellent just to mow the lawn in the middle of the day!! Otherwise you get a lot of 'skeeter bites!

I was walking on my mom's lawn in Buda in May, and it was so dry that I raised some dust as I walked across it. Much of the grass was brown.

Texas needs rain desperately. But they don't need another 37-inch Allison deluge. This Claudette is so wet and slow-moving that I am beginning to be afraid for my mom in Buda. You don't need a full-fledged hurricane to get catastrophic floods. All it takes is a slow-moving tropical storm or depression, or worse, one that has become stationary, to deliver another Allison-type of flood.

I fervently hope Texas receives beneficial rains from Claudette, but not too much too fast. These types of floods destroy homes and kill folks. Plus they tend to be a drain on local resources. It's not like local municipalities have tons of money to burn on storm relief.

So, our prayers are going out to all of you beloved Texans. I love that state so much!!!! :):):) Texas is a very cool place!!! That's why I spent nearly 3 extra weeks down there earlier this year!!!! :):):)
