I voted for the Brazilians to monitor their own continent.....NHC has enough to do. Besides, more man power means increased spending....

It's up to the WMO to decide and at any rate the South American Governments might take exception to a US Agency having that responsibility
(Sorry to bring up a poltical angle-mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa and a thousand pardons but given the anti-American sentiments down there it's a valid point). Besides, there's no indication that NHC would even WANT the job because they spend the off season recuperating from the previous season, writing reports, doign studies and preapring for next season-not to mention that a number of the specialists are due to retire soon.

Agree, why should the NHC have to watch the south atlantic during the off season, especially after the seasons were going through lately. This is time for them to recuperate from last season, take time off, and prepare and improve forecasts for next season. The JTWC and Canadian hurricane centre and all the other basins get the needed time off during their off season, so should the NHC. As Catalina showed, warnings from the US arent appreciated anyways :roll: Maybe the WMO should train speciallists in potentially affected countries in tropical forecasting.
