Let's see:

1. Hilda - 1964 (Lafayette, LA)
2. Betsy - 1965 (Lafayette, LA)
3. Alicia - 1983 (Houston, TX)
4. Carmen - 1974 (Lafayette, LA)
5. Allison - 2001 (Houston, TX) -- no wind, but 20-30 inches rain in 24 hrs.
6. Edith - 1971 (Lafayette, LA)

Went through the eye of Alicia and Carmen, but I don't think I saw sustained Cat 1 wind in either. I know Alicia didn't produce more than 50-60 mph sustained in SW Houston. And I was out riding my bike during Carmen. Dry air entrainment at landfall meant all wind and no rain. We were out playing in it.

Hilda and Betsy packed more of a punch, and we went through the western parts of each hurricane. Probably still only gusts above hurricane force.

Never been through a tropical storm but I rode out the supercell in my avatar in a drivethrough resturaunt east of Denver. Some softball sized hail, and nasty winds.

Well, it's obvious we live in the same area, as those would be the same on my list with the exception that I'd have to add an 8... Audrey, Look at that list and my username seems pretty obvious.

I don't know how to read this one. I picked them because I lived through them, nothing more, nothing less.

1. Hurricane Andrew the master of disaster (I was visiting some family down in South Florida at the time, damn scary  )

2. The Hybridstorm of November 2001/Hurricane Michelle (lost part of my roof, and some trees to the high wind)

3. Hurricane Bob (as a TS by that time; still knocked trees down and caused some wind damage to my house)

4. Hurricane Bertha 1996 (as a TS by that time; No real damage, but heavy rain and howling winds knocked out the power for a bit)

5. Hurricane Floyd Remnants (also knocked out the power for a bit)

6. Hurricane Katrina Remnants (I was out driving when the squall line hit that was near what use to be the center, for about 30 minutes it was quite bad).

7. Halloween Storm/The Perfect Storm/Hurricane Grace (No real damage, but did provide a rainy, windy and miserable Halloween around these parts in 1991)

In my first post, I had completely forgoten about the worst storm I've ever been in. It wasn't Hilda or Betsy, it was a non-tropical storm off the southern tip of South America (Tierra del Fuego) at about 53S/67W. I was on an oil platform (a jack-up) in the southern hemisphere spring of 1980. A big low pressure center passed to our south. In it's wake, high pressure built in and created a tremendous pressure gradient. My anemometer was pegged at 100 kts for many hours. Don't know how much higher it got, as that's as high as my anemometer read. During the peak of the storm, I ventured out on deck a few feet and put my back to a railing/wall and could lift my feet off the ground. The wind was strong enough to pin me to the railing.

I didn't stay out there long, though. That was a strong wind!

Yeah, that railing was 100 feet off the water. If it had given way, then they'd never have found me. Perhaps I'd show up in a block of ice in Antarctica in a few thousand years....

Hugo gave us tropical storm winds with maybe hurricane gusts.
Had rain from Bertha, Bonnie, Fran, Floyd, Dennis, Charley, and Gaston. Clouds from Irene. Frances or Jeanne? spawned a tornado that destroyed my brother's friend's house.
The second worst experience was from TS Earl which came from the back way into South Carolina, I was in middle school on a bus and it was rocking from the gusts.

The NWS has revised the Fujita Scale. Maybe it's time to revise the Saffir Simpson Scale.

Katrina certainly blew my mind.

But title for most bizzare goes to a "Mars Out" sandstorm in Iraq in 2003. Right out of a movie.

I'd have to say #1. Ivan and Dennis #2. Ivan hit in the middle of the night which made it seem worse. Hurricane force winds/gust lasted around 6-8 hours. I'll never forget the sound either, sounded like the Blue Angels were right above the roof of our building all night.
