So there's something else I don't know -- your reference to the "dry air"? Outflow? If the bogusing is related to adding a vortex/tropical low, I'm assuming rising moist air? Any further explanation most appreciated.

AFDs were never intended to be a public product. They were designed for inter-office coordination of forecasts. First time I ever saw one was when I volunteered in the NWS office at Wakefield.

It wasn't until the internet that they became available to the public. Since, there has been pressure on forecasters to cut back on the acronyms, abbreviations, jargon, etc.

I'm not too fond of that effort for a couple of reasons. One is that it limits the ability of the forecaster to communicate effectively. When you take out techinical terminology, you reduce the concision and precision of the discussion. Secondly, I learned a lot by reading the jargon loaded discussions, because anything that I couldn't figure out or understand I sought out the answers from other sources. Usually came out with a lot more knowledge than just the tidbit I was looking for.

That continues to this day. A few months ago, I came across the term 'Rex block', a term I was unfamiliar with. Easy enough to look up and read up on. Also, it's a term that you can't simplify succinctly as it refers to a very particular situation. You can either describe it fully (and burn a few sentences doing so) or you can simplify it in a brief manner, thereby losing the specificity of the situation.

The specific AFD quoted referred to an area of dry that the GFS was missing hence the GFS QPF was overdone therefore they took that into account when looking at the model run (mentally bogused).
