We now have a hurricane! History has been made...

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Emailed NHC too

#21 Postby hurricanetrack » Fri Mar 26, 2004 1:31 pm

I too emailed the NHC to get their input. It is absolutely fascinating to see this. Hopefully, folks along that part of South America will have time to prepare for what ever comes.

What the heck?!?!?!?!?!? My heart skipped a beat when I saw this feature. This is probably one of the most amazing tropical events of my life. I wonder if it would be on the roster for the Atlantic, or, more, if they will name it. I just saw this on the Weather Channel, it is on NRL Monterry. What if they name it? What would it be called? 1S? 1L? ALEX???

I saw this thread and my heart did a bit of a dance too lol..

It wouldn't be 1S. S is used for S. Indian Ocean storms. NRL Monterey has already given it the L identifier. Will it be named Alex??? I doubt it. It'll probably go down in the books as the unnamed hurricane of 2004. Then again, I could be wrong.

The hurricane will remain as a NONAME ... this is not in the North Atlantic and thusly, Alex will NOT be used to identify an unprecedented South Atlantic Hurricane (in our modern era) ... it is not in the NHC's area of responsibility and frankly, no hurricane agency's responsibility.

This is an incredible event that has unfolded right before us ... with its origins beginning as a cold-core system which became a warm-core system and the RIGHT conditions (strong upper high building in the region) has allowed for this hurricane to blossom ...

I think it's interesting how NRL has the system labeled as 01L -- an identifier for North Atlantic storms. I did notice that the UK Met Office was calling the system 01T. Hmm...

They just mentioned this Hurricane on the main BBC news here in the UK - they are so puzzled and call this a totally amazing event.

An odditity for sure but for once I can agree with Derecho that this may not be due to anything more than a freak weather event that has taken place in the past with little awareness.

Has anyone checked the SST's along the Brazilian coast? If it is near 80 then this storm may just strengthen as the outflow and windshear appears to be favorable.

Why do some feel that it is the US taxpayer's responsibility to foot the bill, forecast and warn a country that should have it's own weather services?

Yes. And the large upper high that developed in the wake of the ULL (which became our first South Atlantic Hurricane) came from the very warm SST anomalies off the Central South American Coast ... as much as 2.90ºC ABV NORMAL...

Funny, you mentioned that cause it corresponds to the large upper ridge well to the Southeast of Iceland/Greenland ...
