I don't know anything and haven't seen anything yet, but I find this hard to believe. I wouldn't be as surprised if he was coming to Houston to work for one of the major private weather firms, since several are headquartered here. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

He's not coming to Houston to work for us. Every time I see him at conventions I ask him if he's ready to give up his high-paying, high-profile job and take a much lower-profile and lower-paying job with us. ;-)

San Angelo would certainly be out of the spotlight. I think I'd be bored to tears over there.

Honestly, even with the direction that TWC is headed in, I couldn't really see a better opportunity for a hurricane specialist. Certainly not NWS San Angelo, but even NWS Miami would be mundane by comparison, I would think. Maybe we'll see him on Accuweather? The pay has to be astronomical, so either he's really that fed up with TWC, or he's found a comparably paying gig with a private company.

Cantore is pretty knowledgeable, he just hasn't done much OCM work in about a decade. Since they were bought by Universal I suppose TWC has a pretty large pool of weathermen either for the national NBC stations or from the local affiliates in Miami, Houston, Tampa, etc, that they could draw tape from for covering a storm.

Or it could still be just a rumor since there's been no official word on this.

If this turns out to true, no reason whatsoever to watch any TWC programming. John Hope and Steve Lyons had credibility and knew their stuff. The "downward spiral" of TWC continues. Too many commercials, not enough "air time" for serious coverage and discussion of tropical systems, and, of course, the infamous "Storm Stories." I'll pass. Thank goodness for Storm2K.

Yep TWC is done after this. I think the only remaining one peope like is Cantore, and imo all he does is scream and act full of himself.

Not surprised. One of my friends spoke with him at the AMS conference and said that he was very unhappy with the changes at TWC and would probably leave if they started messing with his department.

I was never a big Steve Lyons fan. I always thought he pushed the NHC party line to much. Now when John Hope was there I never missed an update. John had the expertise and courage of his convictions to tell you what he thought even if it went against current NHC thinking.

John Hope was the best, no question. Hope was real "old-school" and I mean that in a very positive way. Lyons was good as well, but the "surfing" references got old real quick. Nonetheless, he was the only reason to watch the tropical updates during hurricane season. First, it was "Storm Stories" and now they're showing movies as well?

In 1969, the name "Carol" was originally part of the list of Atlantic hurricane names. Look in an old almanac for that year, and you might find it listed. However, the name Carol was retired (1954 storm), and Hope came up his daughter's first name as a replacement. The rest is history.

The Earth times has reported that Dr. Richard Knabb has replaced Steve Lyons

if true, OUTSTANDING choice. I had heard UNCONFIRMED rumors that he was to be the next NHC director

Dr. Lyons won't find very many surfing spots in San Angelo, Texas...

Knabb was at CPHC the last couple of years

However, if the rumors of Knabb being in line for the next NHC director are true, that may be a future loss for them as he would have made an OUTSTANDING director

I'm wondering if the San Angelo post is a temporary stop till he ends up in the CPHC post or something similar. CPHC post would sure fit his continued love for surfing.

It was a graduation gift for her.

Two big bad moves!! Dr. Lyons should not leave TWC, and Dr. Knabb should not be anywhere except the NHC.

Knabb has not been at NHC for a couple of years. He's been at CPHC

Can you all point me to references for the above information? This is fascinating to me as a name expert but I'd like absolute confirmation that it's not an urban legend before I use it in something I write. :)

From Wikipedia Source of Hurricane Camille's Name

Source of Camille name on hurricane naming list

In 1969, Hope's daughter graduated from high school, so he added her name to the list of names to be used for hurricanes that year (at that time, there was no organized list of assigned names to be used, the only requirements were that the names had to be female – male names were not used at that time – in alphabetical order, and not otherwise retired). He had no way of knowing at the time that the storm that would take his daughter's name – Camille – would become one of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes to ever hit the United States when it slammed into Mississippi as a Category five hurricane. His daughter Camille is married to U.S. Congressman Jim Marshall of Georgia.
