Re: ATL IKE: TCI/Bahamas/Florida preps/obs/reports
They didn't say anything about it on the Broward news conference I watched & haven't seen anything on the websites. At this point, I don't see any confirmation of it, but am glad I was planning to fill up this afternoon anyway...

Gotta love it when there's conflicting stories in the media
Guess the prudent thing is to fill up today and be ready no matter what.

PORT EVERGLADES PREPARES FOR HURRICANE IKE
September 05, 2008
Port Everglades continues be open and operational while making preliminary hurricane preparations.
It is anticipated that the U.S. Coast Guard will announce a 48-hour alert at midnight on Saturday, September 6, which will require that all ships make the necessary preparations to leave the Port. Ships will not be required to leave the port until the Coast Guard sets a 24-hour alert, which depends upon storm conditions.
Landside, Port Everglades will stay open as long as it is safe for fuel trucks to drive on the road.
Today, after lessons learned from past storms, Port Everglades is more prepared than ever. FPL has installed hurricane-resistant utility poles and upgraded wiring throughout the Port to strengthen the electrical system. In addition, petroleum companies at Port Everglades have generators to continue filling trucks with gasoline and diesel fuel so deliveries can be made to local and regional retail gasoline stations.
Cruise passengers should check with their cruise lines for any schedule changes.

That is a good thing. I added shutters to mine this year and now they don't leak, so far. Ike might be the true test!

stormcarib.com reports from Turks and caicos:
Out of the Frying Pan...
* From: E Howell <howelledgar at yahoo.co.uk>
* Date: Fri, 5 Sep 2008 23:22:58 +0000 (GMT)
At 2pm today the government of the Bahamas issued a hurricane watch for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Residents throughout the country have been making preparations for the approaching category 3 hurricane. A mandatory evacuation of Salt Cay has been put into effect and several international flights have transported a number of people to distant lands - hopefully lands not in the eventual path of Ike.
Residents, on each inhabited island in the chain, have take the necessary steps to secure life and property. Storm shutters are in place and people are stocking up on can goods and other vital supplies. The clinics made special arrangements for persons needing to refill their medication. The authorities at the Department for Disaster Management have stepped up their plans and we are about to face the music for the second time.
Ike is expected to pack a solid punch in a short period of time and move on to other vistas. The trouble with this scenario is that the ground is saturated, trees are blasted and I believe things are at a tipping point. The centre of Ike is expected to pass just north of the Turks and Caicos Islands - just off North Caicos - the northernmost island in the chain. This would mean that our sustained winds will again, as with Hanna, come at us from the north, northwest, west, southwest, south and then the southeast. We can potentially see another, but much more dangerous, storm surge. Let us prepare with this in mind and make every haste to complete all preparations before noon tomorrow.
The day had an uncanny beauty to it. Clear blue skies; the ocean was as smooth as glass and the varied colours of the sea were in their ultimate glory.
Current conditions at Providenciales: winds out of the northeast at 3 mph.
Edgar V. Howell
and the Bahamas:
Message:? Hurricane Ike heads toward the Bahamas (As at 5.00p.m.

toward the west or west-southwest is expected tonight and tomorrow with a
general motion to the west expected by Sunday. On this track Ike could be near
the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas early Sunday.

with maximum sustained winds near 115 mph (185 km/hr) with higher gusts.
Hurricane Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from? the

Emergencies Office have indicated that extensive planning is underway for Ike
and this is being supported by a UK Support Team.? Tourists are being

Regional Response:

CDERA on the progress of Ike and to provide analysis on its development and
probable effect on the islands.
CDERA has developed scenarios to assist its response planning operations
and has shared these with the threatened states, Jamaica sub-regional focal
points and other critical members of the Regional Response Mechanism.
Radio and other communications checks with the Bahamas and Turks and
Caicos Islands are being carried out by CDERA.
CDERA is in the process of coordinating arrangements to have in place a
damage assessment team on standy for deployment to TCI in the event that they
are affected by Hurricane Ike.

For the Turks and Caicos...first to get hit
Air Jamaica running evac flts for Jamaican nationals out of Turks and Caicos back to Kingston. American Airlines had put some extra lift down there as well for US citizens. Reports of numerous private flights as well. Given the forecast I would suspect that flying will be done by noon as conditions deteriorate. PLS/MBPV has a 7600 foot runway and is 15 feet above sea level on the coast...Grand Turk GDT/MBGT has a 6300 foot runway located on the coast and is only 13 feet above sea level. Last storm surge estimate from the NHC was 9-12 feet. Per AP reports those staying are evaced from the smaller islands to the the larger ones and then inland because of the surge/flooding potential with the southern islands already flooded from Hannah.
North coast of Hispanola already reeling from Gustav and Hannah...flooding north coast Haiti was bad and relief organizations are working to get in. Hopefully this is a glancing blow.
Went thru the net and found very little on prep in the southern bahamas aside from local officals stating 95% houses 'battened up". Inagua would be next...large island...500 sq miles max height 100 feet population around a 1000 and biggest industry Morton Salt. 7000 foot runway about 8 feet about sea level.... MYIG is the identifier.
As of 0900 American has 2 757's enroute to pickup at MBPV....USAir has a 320....looks like someone chartered a 737 to take folks from there to Nassau as well.
Next would be the NE coast of Cuba....good map here
