09L.IKE ATL - Discussion
First, why is 09L there? This is useless information in a thread title and new people don't follow the NRL usually. I liked it when it showed what status the system was like TD, TS, and hurricane.
I can answer 2 questions.
1. The 09 is there for when it's a depression, and doesn't have a name.
2. AL is for not everyone who may know what basin a storm is in, also, if one wants to quickly catch up on Atlantic ONLY, it makes it easy to skip over the others.
But it isn't exactly what I suggested. The scheme I suggested was to put left-most that which does not change, same way standardized databases, catalogues, libraries, etc. have been done for years. For generations it has been found to be the easiest for the MOST people. (Must we re-invent the wheel?)
The example I gave is for the SAME storm, as it progresses:
ATL:99-INVEST - Discussion
ATL:10-NONAME TD - Discussion
ATL:10-JOSEPINE TS - Discussion
ATL:10-JOSEPINE C3 - Discussion - (blahblah latest)
Once it gets declared (ATL:10-) will NEVER change through the life of the storm.
ATL:10-JOSEPHINE <---- that's what I look for.
After that, tell me if it's a Tropical Storm, Category 1, etc, and
THEN tell what topic (Discussion, Recon, "plane on the way" etc.)
Why would I want to read through the words "Tropical Storm" to get to Ike, Hanna, Jo, when next time I look, one might be "Hurricane". If when I left for work, it was TD 10 (ATL:10-NONAME), then I know exactly what I'm seeing when I get home and login and it's upgraded (ATL:10-Josephine TS). All the mods would need to replace is the letters "NONAME" with "JOSEPHINE TS", and later TS with C1, C2, etc. That is the LEAST amount of work for them. And let's face it, they have more than enough work to do already!

p.s. Actually H1,H2, etc. is fine, too.
