I think Ivan only became popular in Spanish speaking countries because certain people admire Russian communism.

Vladimir Guerrero comes to mind as someone whose parents were probably Marxists.

I think Ivan is one of about one hundred and twelve names derived from John, like John, Johann, Jon, Sean, Ian, Ivan, Juan, Jean, Giovanni, etc.

I thought Ivan/Igor was more Dutch/Germanic. There are Netherland Antilles, after all. It's why a Gustav replacement would probably be replaced with another Germanic sounding name. Guy, it ain't.

Julia is a spanish name (pronounced who-lee-ah) nd Nestor is French

Guy would rock. I'd be reminded of Guy LeFleur on every advisory.

Guy would remind me of Guy Fieri from Food Network TV where he is the host of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Who here has seen a show on SpikeTV called MXC? Their on-site reporter is named "Guy LeDouche"

Anyhow, I see retirements for Gustav, Ike, and Paloma. Omar and Hanna are questionable, while Dolly and Fay are highly unlikely.

I have seen it. Thanks, because if that really is the replacement, then all I would be able to think about during Hurricane Guy advisories is Guy LeDouche. This considering I haven't seen one episode for roughly 3 years.

Have any retirement cases been announced yet? Gustav and Ike are almost certainly going to be retired, Hanna and Paloma have a good shot and Dolly, Fay and Omar have an outside chance.

Dolly and Fay have NO CHANCE

I'd give Hanna an outside chance (though if I wer emaking the decisions and could only retire one storm, it would be Hanna)

If I was to retire names from 2008, it would be Gustav, Hanna, and Ike.

Funny how this thread had no activity when retirements were announced.
