Oh...you will. Even a strong TS can be scary...especially if you are in Sarasota (on the coast).

lol a stong TS lol

45-50 MPH wind scare the daylight out of me. I often mistake 30 MPH winds for 60-70 MPH winds. so if I think 30-50 MPH winds are that strong I in all my days would not want to got trough 100 MPH winds unless I'm confident i'm safe.

I would stay for anything but a 4 or 5.

Btw...people are entitled to their own opinions and calling someone stupid for riding out a hurricane is quite rude.
If you want to ride it out, fine...if you don't, fine. I don't hear anyone on here calling people pussies for evacuating.

Plus I'd hate to be like my great uncle that drove back to a perfectly structurally sound house after Katrina only to find that looters had busted in the door and stole everything valuable out of the interior.

You should take all of their reasons into account before calling people idiots.

Even if you are on the Gulf coast within the surge zone?

I can't believe this.

One of these days on a Cat 4/5 landfall I will chase it and go into a parking garage or something sturdy and film the winds. I wonder, have true Cat 5 winds ever been recorded before?

Be careful!

Joking aside, when will you quit being so fascinated with riding out a Category Four or Category Five?

Actually, you never will. I can tell you are determined to go your own ways. I can already answer my question without asking you.

If I was in a surge zone...no. but 28feet or higher above sea level...yeah.

If it's a Katrina case that wouldn't matter because I would have already high tailed it out of there before it weakened to a 3.

I don't know if you're referring to my post, but I'm not within the surge zone. Even Katrina's peak surge would have fallen short of my house in elevation.

My claim that I would ride out anything in my house is based on the fact that I am well out of range of storm surge.

Cat. 4 force winds are probably the absolute most I would watch from a sheltered outside area (parking garage). Search the web for video of hurricane charley making landfall. The videos you will find will probably show you just how dangerous it really is to try and watch that kind of wind. At landfall charley produced 175mph wind gusts...which is to the strength of an F-3 tornado. As for TRUE Cat. 5 force winds...Yes, they have been reached. Usually they are in a very small area and the wind equiptment is blown away before those speeds are "officially" recorded. Looking at post-storm damage though, it can be determined. In Hurricane Andrew, there was a very small area hit by weak Cat. 5 winds, and most in the direct eyewall only saw Cat. 3 or 4 force winds. Outside of the eyewall you only saw Cat 1/2 or weaker force winds. In rare cases though, such as Wilma during her strongest point. The ENTIRE eyewall may be made up of strong Cat. 4 or Cat. 5 force winds. When that kind of beast one day comes ashore...WATCH OUT!!!

But if that was the case with Andrew then Charley which was a mid 4 at landfall likely had mainly Cat 3 winds in Punta Gorda which is several miles inland and thats where most of the video is taken from.
