I'm at west end and damn this is a LOT more than I was counting on. Wind gusting in excess of 45, enough to make the boat masts wail across the street. Enough wind to be fun but not enough to be scary.

Been hearing a few transformers pop as well as seeing some of the signature blue flashes from power surges and down lines. Looking at radar, it apperas that Cindy is moving again toward the NNE or NE. If that verifies, we should be on about our worst in the next hour or two.

Still storming very heavily in eastern New Orleans with serious wind gusts. Lost power for a couple minutes but its back up. I think New Orleans didn't pay enough attention to this storm expecting the NE turn. Fast food places (etc.) was still up an running as the first strong squalls was rolling into the area and I noticed many people at bus stops around 9:30 PM. Still don't expect serious problems, but would feel better if everybody was indoors.

I sure didn't expect it to be this severe. I am in St Bernard.

That would be extremely unlikely. Any reports of GUSTS to 75 mph will be VERY limited, but sustained at 75 mph... let lightning strike me twice.

(I hope I don't regret saying that. )

Reports of 69 MPH gusts at the lakefront. So you can figure 50 mph + sustained in the city. 54 MPH gusts at the airport, but that is west of the city. Transformers are blowing all over the place.

I ask...are we sure this wasn't a minimum hurricane?

New Orleans isn't exactly on the coast, so allowing for some land friction a 75mph storm would only produce 60 mph in the city....which is close to what I am seeing. I just watched a tree across my backyard fall on my neighbors house.

I ain't scared for my life or anything like that...but this sure the hell wasn't what I was expecting when the met said 30-40 mph winds in the city!

:(

That's why you look at the latest advisories which had the storm passing very close as a 70 mph TS which is not very much below a Cat 1 hurricane.

70 mph is just a place mark. It could be 65 mph winds or 75 mph winds. Nothing is stable in these things.

Cho,

That's how it was for Tropical Storm Isidore. We didn't get a drop of rain, but 50 miles to the east of US was soaked.

Looking at the radar today we didn't get a drop of rain today or yesterday. We had been getting rain everyday before that. Cindy brought us very dry weather here on the west side. Go out 120 miles to the east side of Cindy... different story.
