Insurance

#1 Postby sponger » Mon Jul 25, 2005 5:03 pm

Well, like so many others here I recieved my "we are breaking up" letter from Allstate. 2 universal quote services immediately came back as no providers. Does anyone know if there is a reputable Co still offering insurance in Fl. I would hate to have "we screw you," insurance when the next big one hits!

Im in Florida and I use Nationwide. The adjuster handed me a check on the spot the same day he inspected for damages after Ivan. I"ve also already received a check already from the damage Dennis caused...(not nearly as extensive), but appreciate the timely manner they handle the claims. They are going up on the rates by 25% at the end of the year...but considering how dependable they are when you need them to be so...I guess I can live with it.

I don't know about Florida but my parents had that happen last after Ivan came through here. They got a nice little letter from American National (which at the time my dad was working for) saying that their house insurance was being cancel due to where they live~hurricane alley. They went with someone local but they are in Alabama. Sorry that I am no help.

I have Nationwide and they were awesome after Charley. The problem is they are no longer writing new policies in Florida I think.

You can go through the JUA and they will find 'someone' who will cover you. The problem I have found is that my insurance doubled since Frances and Jeanne. It is almost too much for me to afford anymore and because of the age of my house, 1927, there are very few who will cover it at all. And I live INLAND! as far as insurance companies go, we are all considered hurricane prone now and it will get more difficult as storms continue to come.

I have Liberty American.. I had a claim during the storms and my rate actually went DOWN....But I have that new clause that I have a 5 % hurricane deductible per calander year..Which means if we get damage from 3 storms I only get hit with 1 deductable . But if I get hit by 1 storm I could be screwed.

I have had State Farm for a zillion years for home, car, personal umbrella... no problems whatsoever. Flood insurance is through another carrier. And my beach house Wind policy if through Citizens. the FL state insurer --- no problems so far and we are almost on the beach.

As an attorney for a large insurance company, my advice would be to ask your agent lots of questions and carefully go over that actual policy...every word of it. Its true that some companies are no longer offering homeowner's coverage in hurricane prone areas. Its also my understanding that some of the companies that are have written additional exclusions into their policies. So don't wait for the next major storm to be surprised.

Keep us informed of how things progress for you, it would be good information for those who will get the hurricane risk "see ya, have a nice life letter" from the ins co. I was tossed aside by Allstate as well a few years ago. It took me several days to find a comparable replacement carrier, but I am hoping to not have to start shopping around again.

Bwaa-Ha-Haaa... :grrr: You can just count the storms. Florida is heading towards a lifestyle where there are ritzy enclaves of half-million dollar homes and up, along with the hotel-encrusted tourist areas (Disney and the coasts. Most of the regular folks are going to live in little-to-no insured "homes" - just one more storm away from doom.

"Florida - the New Jamaica, Mon!" 8-)

This may be stating the patently obvious, but flood insurance, if required, is Federal; it doesn't matter what agent sells it, it's always the same price (based on your location and elevation or flood zone).

I feel for you, but it could be worse. Here in the Keys, I'm required to have THREE separate policies: Flood, Windstorm, and Homeowners.

You would think the homeowners insurance companies would get a clue and sign everybody in the Keys up. After all, they don't have to cover us for hurricanes at all because we have separate windstorm and flood policies. But I have no chance of using a national company. The Florida Windstorm Underwriting Association was a state pooled fund originally set up specifically for Monroe County (the Keys) when all other insurers wanted to leave the area. Can you believe at one time we were the only area anybody thought was at real risk for a hurricane disaster?

What's especially ridiculous, IMHO, is that my federal Flood policy will never pay a cent, because it is impossible to flood here (as I understand it, storm surge doesn't count as a flood, because it's "wind-driven water") My Homeowner's will never pay anything, because hurricane damage is completely excluded. And the Keys will never suffer an enormous loss such as with Andrew, because they're only four miles wide at the most. I guess a direct hit on Key West would damage some real estate, but I doubt if every structure on the island was leveled it would cost even a fraction of Andrew's $25 billion, and the most expensive resorts and homes shouldn't be destroyed anyway. Yet nobody wants to write insurance anywhere in the Keys.

Thanks for letting me vent. Ahhhhh.

I have Allstate, and they treated us well after Frances and Jeanne. We just received a policy renewal, but if anything bad happens this year in Central Florida, I could see them pulling out, even though they still drew a healthy profit even after all the Hurricane damage they paid for.
