opal....what were the max winds in pensacola? that's not far at all from perdido...
a friend of mine lost her house in pensacola....lost everything she owned...:(

Pensacola only had Cat 1 winds in Opal... the eye went east of there. The marginal Cat 3 winds from Opal were around Navarre, Mary Esther, and Fort Walton Beach.

Ivan's max winds were in the Category 1 and 2 range in most places I think. If there were Cat 3 winds, they were isolated in very narrow swaths less than 1 mile from the coast.

It was the storm surge that was on par with a Cat 4 or 5 storm that did the vast majority of the damage.
