the process of "trough splitting". it has been alluded to by several posters and the infamous JB. enlighten me ....thanks for time...............rich

It's a complicated processs involving fluid dynamics. In a nutshell, these usually happen in non El Nino patterns. A trof (trough) often moves down behind (with) a frontal boundary. At x point it narrows and gets stretched out where a piece of energy will take off NE and a piece drifts off to the SW (often as a cut-off upper level low pressure) (aka "peeling away"). Sometimes they leave a piece of energy back at the surface, but often the process itself interrupts windflow causing a change in the weather pattern or possibly aiding in ventilation (exhaust) leading to outflow as a ridge builds in behind the trof.
The best way to understand it is to go to your favorite CONUS or Tropical WV loop that you can run over a period of at least a couple of days. You can watch the process as it happens on WV.
